BIOGRAPHY
AKIRA KAWAHATA is a Japanese visual artist who lives in New York, primarily working in photography.
Akira’s photographic journey began under the nocturnal sky of Nagoya, Japan, where, at the tender age of seven, he captured the ephemeral beauty of sleeper trains with his first camera. This early introduction to photography was not merely about capturing records but marked the beginning of a lifelong journey into visual expression, deeply rooted in his family’s legacy. Influenced by his grandfather’s extensive documentation of Japan’s post-war construction and the rapidly disappearing rural landscapes.
Akira’s artistic development took shape during his BA studies at Tokyo Polytechnic University, where he was mentored by the renowned Eikoh Hosoe. This pivotal mentorship profoundly shaped his understanding of art photography, helping him refine his vision and perspective as an artist.
After moving to New York in 2006, Akira found new avenues to expand and deepen his work as a visual artist. He is currently pursuing his MFA at Columbia University, continuing to broaden his exploration of visual art, with an expected graduation in 2026.
